Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Who uses Mentor?

Everybody in the climbing industry! Mentor is built for gyms to host their own internal training and to engage with outside training in one place. From climbing gear to POS education to wall systems, youth coaching, programming, and routesetting, Mentor is designed to support every aspect of climbing staff training.

That said, if a gym (or specialty retailer) is not on Mentor themselves, they can still access your training when you share your training link with them. Any student can sign up for your courses, training managers just won't be able to track and assign this training or see training insights until the gym is subscribed to Mentor.

Q2: Who makes and manages Mentor course content?

Ideally you create, own, and manage all your course content.

You’ll have unlimited ability to upload, update, and delete content from your courses. You could create materials in-house, use resources you've already made for reps, or have your reps create more training.

If you'd like assistance, for a day rate fee we can film you/your team/your athletes, and for an hourly editing fee, we can edit those RAW videos into finished training videos (or text or image-based lessons). In this case we can also upload that content to your course and you can manage it afterwards.

Q3: How many courses do I get?

Each gear brand will have
  • 1 main Brand Course
  • 1 optional Latest Products course that can be updated regularly as needed
  • the option for additional targeted specialty courses

Each system provider will have
  • 1 Intro to the System / Setup course
  • 1 Upkeep / Maintenance course focused
  • the option for additional targeted specialty courses for advanced topics

We limit the amount of courses to reduce overwhelm on the students taking the courses and managers who are assigning and tracking training. Fewer courses also ensure that students can quickly find information in the future when they want to reference your training materials.

There are no limits to the amount of content in your courses; you may add as many resources as you'd like.

Q4: Can you explain the course structure?

A course is a container for information. Inside the course you'll have different sections, like chapters. Each section can have unlimited lessons (video, text, pictures, PDF, .ppt, embedded websites, etc).

The brand course includes all the most important information gym employees should know. You could have sections like:

  • History of Brand / value prop
  • Sustainability of company / Environmentally friendly products
  • Unique tech
  • Key Products / Best Selling Products
  • Line Comparisons / How to compare & sell / Fitting suggestions
  • Merchandizing options
  • Rental program details
  • Customer service / Warranty tips
  • Pro-deal info
  • Athletes favorite gear
  • Optional Quiz(es) to test knowledge
  • Optional Certificate of Completion

The second course for Latest Products, is an addendum course for people who have already taken the full brand-course, or for those excited about new gear. This course will likely get updated as new product hits the market. This could also be a yearly or bi-yearly refresher so students don’t have to dig to find new information in the brand course.

* Student progress can be reset from the brand so staff know there is new material to review
* Include any new products, new tips, new sales options, etc.

You may also create Specialty Courses presenting unique topics / courses that would be assigned to specific sets of employees only, or cover a specific topic, i.e.
  • Rep team product and brand knowledge
  • Routesetting / W.A.H. specific options and overviews
  • Knowledge Base/Advanced Learning modules (for the nerds wanting to dive deeper)
  • Sustainability in Climbing
  • Information on all products (for brands with large depth/breadth)

Q5: Can we use our content outside of the Mentor platform?

Yes, absolutely. Any content you put on Mentor is yours to use anywhere you choose, like your own website, YouTube, or other channels. We believe climbing education should be accessible to everyone, which means no exclusivity requirements.

The value of hosting your content on Mentor is having all staff training in one central place where gyms can find it quickly and easily, without ads or distractions pulling attention elsewhere.

Q6: Can I use Mentor without prior LMS experience?

Yes! Mentor is designed to be easy to use, even if you’ve never worked with an online learning platform (an LMS) before. We provide training videos along with ongoing support whenever questions come up.

Q7: Can we use athletes in our videos?

Yes. Of course. We expect you will want to utilize all of the resources you have available to establish trust and credibility with gym staff and athletes provide an effective way to establish that relationship with your brand.

Elevate Your Existing Product Training.

There's often a large gap between the skills employees have, and the skills they need to effectively represent your brand and provide high quality customer service.

The challenge is, there is a lack of easily accessible resources which gym managers can assign to their front line staff to elevate staff knowledge and skill development.

Mentor exists so every gym employee can gain the knowledge and skills they need, when they need them, while making it easy for gym management, and without placing unnecessary stress on your rep team.

It's a win for you, for gym managers, for the retail staff, and a win for gym guests who experience high quality retail interactions.
